چکیده

detection of packet loss and conservative slow-start algorithms to improve TCP performance. With its proactive congestion detection, it utilizes network bandwidth more efficiently and achieves a higher throughput than TCP Reno. This paper shows that in asymmetric networks in which the bottleneck is on the reverse path rather than on the forward path, its performance can be significantly lower than that of Reno, in contrast to the 37% throughput improvement claimed in [4][5]. In particular, Vegas may erroneously converge to an operating region in which the available bandwidth on the forward path is under-utilized by a large margin. Even worse, when connections running Vegas and Reno co-exist and compete on the same network, Vegas suffers a severe penalty. We propose an approach to improve Vegas' throughput in asymmetric networks.

Snug-Vegas and Snug-Reno: efficient mechanisms for performance improvement of TCP over heterogeneous networks

Improving the performance of the traditional TCP in wireless IP communications has been an active research area. The significant cause of packet losses in such heterogenous networks is no longer limited to network congestion. The performance degradation of TCP in wireless and wired-wireless hybrid networks is mainly due to its lack of ability to differentiate the packet losses caused by network...

Performance evaluation of HTTP/TCP on asymmetric networks

As the Internet users grow, new network technologies are emerging. Those include ADSL and cable modem, which essentially provide asymmetric bandwidth for uplink and downlink to the user’s connection. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of HTTP/TCP protocols on such asymmetric networks, and present the analytic results of the mean throughput of TCP. The transfer time of Web documents by H...

Performance Evaluation of TCP Vegas versus Different TCP Variants in Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Wired Networks

A study on the performance of TCP Vegas versus different TCP variants in homogeneous and heterogeneous wired networks are performed via simulation experiment using network simulator (ns-2). This performance evaluation prepared a comparison medium for the performance evaluation of enhanced-TCP Vegas in wired network and for wireless network. In homogeneous network, the performance of TCP Tahoe, ...

A novel implementation of TCP Vegas for optical burst switched networks

TCP performance over bufferless Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks could be significantly degraded due to the misinterpretation of network congestion status (referred to as false congestion detection). It has been reported that burst retransmission in the OBS domain can improve the TCP throughput by hiding burst loss events from the upper TCP layer, which can effectively reduce the congestio...

Ece901 : Mobile Communications Empirical Study of Tcp Vegas over Wireless with Link Layer Recovery

TCP Vegas has been receiving much attention recently due to its superior performance over TCP Reno in wireline networks. However, no study has been conducted on how TCP Vegas will perform over wireless networks where TCP performs poorly. In this study, we compare the link utilization of single TCP Vegas and TCP Reno connection over wireless link with Link Layer Recovery mechanism. We show that ...
